Earlier this week Digital Spy made their way to Alexandra Palace. Usually they head to the beautiful venue for a massive headline gig, but this time saw us turn up to a book signing. Yes, you read that right - a book signing.
One Direction were in town to sign copies of their new book Where We Are, with their status as a pop phenomenon meaning that they had to ditch the local WH Smith for a hall that could host their humongous legion of fans.
Digital Spy were lucky enough to nab a few minutes with the guys backstage to talk about their new album Midnight Memories, as well as finding out that One Direction duct tape actually exists.
Congratulations on another massively successful year. Have you had time to let all sink in, or has it been too busy?
Liam: "You kind of just take each day as it comes now. We're off to America now to do some TV shows there, and it's just hard to believe the stuff we're getting up to these days as young gentlemen."
Usually book signings take place in a moderately-sized WH Smiths in a shopping centre, but you guys have Alexandra Palace...
Liam: "Well I've never been here before, so it's nice to finally visit."
Niall: "We haven't done a signing in a long time. Maybe last year in America was the last time, so it's good getting back into seeing all of our fans again."
Harry: "I think it's very different, but not too different. We've not made this weird album."
Louis: "It's different, but it fits."
Harry: "It's a good transition from the last two. I think 'Best Song Ever' was a good link between the two, and that evolution just keeps going."
Your latest single 'Story Of My Life' was quite reflective. Is that something that runs through your new album?
Louis: "We've had a long life!"
Liam: "For sure. We never expected to be at this point of our career three years on. 'Story Of My Life' fits because this is the story of our life, lads."
Midnight Memories leaked a week ahead of its official release. How annoying is that after working hard on the record?
Liam: "It is annoying because there's this big build-up and it affects sales. We really want a number one, so we're just kind of hoping for the best now. Hopefully people go out and buy it."
Louis: "It's just frustrating when you work so hard on an album and you kind of want everyone to hear it at the same time. Some select fans won't listen to it until it's out, which is great. But there are others who obviously can't help themselves."
Niall: "The reaction's been great. From what we've seen on Twitter, it's going down well. But we would have prefered to have seen the reaction next week."
Harry: "It's just nice to have an impact. If there was an album I liked and I could listen to it a week before, I probably would. It's just nice to have that moment where it builds up to, 'Now it's out and everyone can listen to it'. Ultimately, it's for the fans to listen to."
Liam: "It happens these days all the time. There are some very clever people out there. You're buggers!"
You're releasing in the busy period before Christmas alongside the likes of Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Eminem. Have you managed to listen to any of their records?
Harry: "Definitely. I feel like Eminem's gone back to something that was there before. I think the new songs are wicked."
Niall: "He's back! He's great."
Liam: "I love Eminem."
Next year you have your massive stadium tour, which will be your biggest shows ever. Have you started preparing for that?
Harry: "We've already started looking at the creative stuff in term of the stage, the setlist and the screens. It's exciting, but we have only just come off tour, so it feels weird looking towards the next one. The touring part is the funnest part. Getting out to the fans is great."
Do you think you'll find the size of the crowds overwhelming, or are you used to that by now?
Liam: "When you look at people's stadium tours, you're kind of in awe of how many people are there. I was looking at pictures of Take That's tour and you can see just see a sea of people. It's going to be crazy to be in the middle of that."
Harry: "We have a fragrance that's out. And duct tape, a backpack and a pencil case!"
Niall: "And a lunchbox!"
Louis: "All of which are great for Christmas."
Liam: "We don't have any winter jumpers, lads. We've missed a market there."
Harry: "We have."
Liam: "We have done some?"
Louis: "It's not a cable knit, but we're getting there."
Harry: "It's in the pipeline."
Woah woah woah, let's go back to the subject of One Direction duct tape...
Harry: "Duct tape!"
Liam: "The duct tape was strange and people have even made hats and stuff out of it - even waistcoats and things. It's amazing what you can make out of duct tape these days."
Harry: "We went into rehearsals the other day and we had our schedule taped to the wall with our duct tape. I couldn't believe it."
Liam: "I never got any of that duct tape. Where are the freebies?"
Louis: "We spend a lot of time talking about duct tape in interviews now."
Liam: "That's why it's sold loads!"
What's the next product? One Direction Blu-Tack?
Louis: "That's not a bad idea. One-Tack!"
There we go.
Liam: "Tic Tac."
Louis: "Um, I think that's already a brand."
One Direction's new book Where We Are is out now, while their third album Midnight Memories will be released on November 25.
One Direction will take part in a in a seven-hour live broadcast to be streamed on YouTube and Google+ on Saturday, November 23, which has been named 1D Day.
One Direction have admitted to Digital Spy that they were "nervous" ahead of the premiere of their new film This Is Us.
Watch Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Niall Horan talking to us on the red carpet about the movie below.
Styles confessed that he found the prospect of seeing the final cut of the film "a scary thought", while Payne was overwhelmed by the support of their fans.
The band also talk about their future plans in the clip, including their impending world tour and new album, which is due for release later this year.
One Direction recently insisted that there is 'no acting' in the movie, with Styles adding: "They were just following us, there wasn't too much stuff that were big setups.
"It was just getting on with the day while having someone in your way while you're trying to get out the door!"
This Is Us is scheduled for release on August 29 in the UK and August 30 in the US.
We thought we'd share some of our favourite One Direction videos and interviews today with you guys!
Hope you enjoy them!
